THE CHARACTER OF A SOCIETY
Oftentimes people find it difficult to reason out why some societies sustain the trajectories they follow. The answer is seen from the above statement.
The character of a society determines what kind of leadership, they elect. The character of a society determines how it treats the poor and vulnerable people within it. How the society treats the poor and vulnerable has a lot to do with the underlying principles of that society.
Some societies see the poor and vulnerable as necessary evils that have to be borne as a burden. Others see them as unfortunate sectors that could be tolerated. Very enlightened and positive societies see them as a project that needs to be solved and ended, no matter how long it takes.
Let me bring it down to the level of the family and individuals. How do you see the poor and vulnerable? People to exploit or people to neglect? Or even people to ignore?
Our ability to see the poor and vulnerable as our personal failure is a giant step towards helping them out of that situation on a permanent or programmed basis with a determined process and inputs!
Governments and people that handle the poor and vulnerable by providing them ad-hoc necessities of life such as food, clothing, shelter and slush funds instead of a programmed intervention are only being politically and socially mischievous. That should be discouraged as the temporary relief those provisions make do more harm than good. They actually open the eyes of the poor and vulnerable to the euphoria of living better and once the slush funds or temporary provisions finish, they seek to replace them through illegal means.
Governments, societies, families and individuals are therefore advised to think towards programmed interventions through economic empowerment, apprenticeship programmes, community supports, business supports, agricultural supports, educational supports, tax relief: these are known and proven interventions that, when sustained, pull out the poor and vulnerable from their predicaments on a permanent basis.
So, ask yourself, before you get to the level of governance, how do I perceive the poor. You can actually change this mindset and start interventions at your level, while influencing your neighbors and friends and families.
Lets do this!
